The days of Lassie and Old Yeller are gone. Today we are more likely to encounter pets with names like ‘Killer’ or ‘Psycho.’ As they’ve always been, dogs are little more than a reflection of their owner’s personalities. And since people seem to become more aggressive as each day goes by, it makes perfect sense to protect yourself from both the hostile owner as well as the dog.
One way to stay a step ahead of an aggressive or dangerous animal is with an effective animal repellant. All commercial animal repellents are safe and humane offering only temporary disability to the target animal, allowing you the time to make your escape from an attack.

Animal repellents come in two primary varieties, chemical and electronic. Since the majority of attacks come from dogs, electronic dog repellent is designed specifically for dogs and emits a sound that only canines can hear. These electronic repellents are handheld, easily concealed, lightweight, and battery operated. When activated they emit a sound that is extremely unpleasant to dogs. The dog’s natural instinct tells him to immediately flee the sound, which allows you to retreat to safety. The effective range of an electronic dog repellent can be up to 40 feet.
The alternative to the electronic animal repellant, which again, is primarily designed to prevent dog attacks is the chemical repellant. These are effective for virtually all hostile animals. Chemical animal repellent is made from essentially the same ingredients as similar products designed to thwart human attacks. Chemical animal repellent is prepared from a specially formulated pepper spray agent. These products come in light canisters and have a range of up to 10 feet. Much like human pepper spray, pepper-based compounds cause extreme irritation if applied to a dog's nose, eyes, or mouth.
One such product is offered by Mace brand and is marketed under the name of Mace Muzzle. Mace Muzzle is equipped with a flip-top safety cap, fingergrip dispenser, belt clip and keychain. This 14-gram stream unit sprays up to 10 feet. A single canister contains 10 one-second bursts. This product is contoured so that you automatically know when it’s ready for use simply by properly holding it.
Chemical animal repellents are favored by joggers, cyclists, hikers, and delivery people. Commercial animal repellents available to the public have been tested and found to be non-lethal and are approved by the EPA.
If you spend a great deal of time outdoors, especially these days as more and more reports are logged of serious and even fatal animal attacks, preparedness is virtually the only option to completely avoid aggression from a rogue animal. The options are simple, inexpensive, easy to conceal, and easy to use. Doesn’t it make sense to be prepared? Of course it does. |
